Hi, I’m Andrea.

You might know me as the host of Yogaland Podcast or as the wife of rockstar yoga teacher, Jason Crandell. (He would die of embarrassment if he knew I wrote that, but I’m telling myself that it’s better than “guru.”)

The short version of the why behind this Substack is: It’s a place for me to offer inspiration about the things I care about — emotions, embodiment, motherhood, midlife, and creativity — all through the lens of yoga and meditation.

I want it to be helpful and hopeful and I also want to connect with you, my community.

So far, I am loving it here on Substack. Thanks for being here with me.

The long version is: I started doing yoga in my mid-twenties in the mid-90s. It was a slow burn and took me several years to become a consistent yogi.

Then, in tiny, dank loft space above Shotwell Avenue in San Francisco, I discovered Ashtanga Yoga and had what felt like a hallucinogenic trip in Savasana (sidenote: I am far too anxious a person to have ever done any hallucinogenic drugs, so this natural high felt amazing.)

Yoga has been the centerpiece of my life since that random Tuesday night. Within a year I immersed myself in a 200-hour yoga teacher training with Sarah Powers. I started working as an editor at Yoga Journal and would continue to do so for a decade. Also, I met my now husband through yoga (and yes, we were co-workers who dated in secret for awhile; very exciting times).

Yoga and meditation have transformed and shaped my adult life. These practices have given me tools to work with my nervous system and with my mind so that I’m no longer defined by the anxiety and depression that walloped me in my twenties. They’ve introduced me to teachers and mentors who have helped me through pain, heartbreak, and fear. Yoga and meditation have taught me about embodiment and consciousness and have not only made my life more manageable, but more beautiful.
