OK, OK, here’s something I think about all the time and I figure I must not be alone in this (But maybe I am?). It’s what keeps me practicing and creating the podcast and even writing this here Substack thingie: My one big hope is that by giving people the tools to find individual happiness and contentment we will — eventually!1 — we can create a more compassionate, calm, caring society.
And I don’t mean for this to sound like sparkles and unicorns. I think about it as I’m falling asleep at night and it’s almost like a desperate plea:
How can I help people understand that introspection and self-reflection will make them feel A LOT happier and less compelled to engage in a two-hour social media fight?
How can I persuade people that self-compassion is not a “nice to have,” it’s a “need to have,” especially if we want to have healthy and fulfilling relationships with our very own family and friends.
How can I help make the concept of nervous system regulation as ubiquitous as strength-training?
How can I get across that we get better at navigating life — at feeling the joys and managing the tragedies — when we spend time practicing the art of living with more presence and attention?
