He wrote, sang and produced their songs by the time he was twenty ... TWENTY!?! Off to listen to more of Mr Jason on the pod, 'cause I haven't heard enough over the last couple of months during Mod I + Mod II of Adv TT ;)
I couldn't believe it either. They went so far so fast from that original cringey rap style 😂 He was completely self-taught and just started cranking out hits. He was such a genuine, original talent. I also couldn't believe how soft-spoken he seemed to be, especially given his pure, natural confidence onstage. I can't help but think that if he had been born 20 years later and been able to live authentically as a young man, he might not have died so young. He appeared to have died as a result of long-term substance abuse.
And such an understanding friend in Andrew. Your nephew is hitting out of the park btw. When he said he was 19 I just about fell outta my chair. I'm 53 and it's been suggested I do a podcast but I'm way too scared :P
Finally watched the Wham! doc last night with 'himself' ... now, I was like 7 when Wham! were at their height, and they were the first ever pop act that I recall loving to hear and sing along to, esp Wake Me Up... I knew the outline of their story.... but this doc... we both absolutely loved it. My husband and I enjoyed the fun, the nostalgia, the songs (oh, the amazing dance along tunes!!!)... but it was this amazing story of male friendship, one that's not really discussed or portrayed very much, that really touched me. It was quite emotional.
I felt the same! It was so refreshing to see their authentic connection...I had no idea. It was beautiful how much they loved each other, how much fun they had, how they supported each other. I wish George was still here.
I love your transparency and authenticity and ability to stay current, accessible, interesting and vulnerable! Thanks for always sharing from your heart! When I do read and listen to you it is always perfectly timed. Thank you
Andrea! I was a Wham! fan in the 80s as well and I stumbled upon and watched the doc on Netflix (twice!) on Friday-Saturday this past weekend, so when your email arrived in my inbox, I once again thought, “Wow, this Andrea person and I could be BFFs if irl if I could quash down all the extrovert energy that oozes from my pores and not scare her off!” 😆 (Also, congrats again on 300 episodes! And have a great time in London! I’m going to listen to your nephew’s podcast while I walk my dogs this morning.)
Um, we would DEFINITELY be friends! Most of my closest friends are extroverts!! I love that so many of us of this generation were served up Wham by Netflix and we devoured it :)
Always love reading what you share! Thank you, Andrea! One funny thing - I do not have Netflix so I texted my friend Nancy yesterday asking her if I could come over to watch the Wham documentary. She said "absolutely that would be fun" so.... this week we'll get some snacks and watch it. And after reading what you wrote I now even more want to see it Theirs was one of my first cassette tapes when I was a kid. Wishing you a wonderful time in London!!!
Thanks so much for sharing my piece, Andrea!

Gonna listen to the podcast straight ahead! Also, thank you for recommending Emily’s text. We do have a huge problem here.
